  26. CGM (Computer Graphics Metafile) is an ISO and ANSI standard (naturally,
  27. my copy is at home and packed away, so I can't quote the number),
  28. available from American National Standards Institute, New York, New York,
  29. USA (I don't have the phone number, either) for very big bucks.  It is
  30. actually three standards in one, one for a printable text encoding, one
  31. for a fairly verbose binary encoding, and one for a "save every bit you
  32. can squeeze out" binary encoding.  I helped write it, but it's been twelve
  33. years, most of it is forgotten now.

  43. Yeah, and arguably not worth porting any more; the CGM standard is _old_. 
  44. It predates nicely typeset text, predates the dominance of raster graphics
  45. in the softcopy display market, predates any use of mixing data and code
  46. in "objects", etc.  It was designed primarily to make it easy to make a
  47. tape copy of computer drawn engineering line drawing ("blueprint") data so
  48. it could be plotted later on an offline plotter, and has since been
  49. shoehorned into lots of commercial shrink wrapped software packages as an
  50. interchange format of last resort because for a long time it was the only
  51. international graphics archival standard going.  It does have a raster
  52. encoding, but just barely, a of my copy.

  54. Its model of graphics, last time I looked, was pretty wimpy compared to
  55. the needs of photorealistic rendering, e.g.

  57. My copy is in one volume, I understand the most recent is in several
  58. volumes, each around US$100 in cost.  Perhaps the functionality has gone
  59. up with the cost, though; I don't know.
